Friends
of Coturri Winery,
We
had a cold and moderately moist winter, and we had an unusually severe
spring frost in wine country to start off the new Millenium. Ive
been on the road a lot this past spring, visiting friends in Texas,
Ohio, Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona, Tennesse, North Carolina, and Maine.
As
we are working our way through the 1999 vintage it it emerging as a
very good one. The wines have a very full forward fruit in the aroma,
it is nice and sweet in the middle palate and has structured tannins
that are soft and creamy. The small vineyard designations and reserve
wines are coming to market. The Zinfandels are in a word, fantastic.
Everyone hits the mark for what we look for in a Coturri-style Zinfandel:
dark, full-bodied, sweet fruit and creamy soft acidity.
We
have some wine offerings that will knock your socks off:

1999
Syrah Crane Vineyards
Here is a rare
and limited chance to taste what the Houston Chronicle describes
as a Schwarzeneggaresque Syrah. It could outpunch "Rocky"
in a dark alley. It
is a brooding monster, with loads of blueberry, balckberry, plum,
and dried cherry flavors. 14%
alcohol.
Only 150 cases
produced.
$45 per bottle.
1999
Pinot Noir Jewell Vineyards Sonoma Mountain
The
vines at Jewell Vineyards on Sonoma Mountain are 38 years
old and are dry farmed (without irrigation) by Bob Cannard. The
clone selection is the famed Wente and is on St. George rootstock.
A very noble grape is produced on this 1 1/2 ton to the acre site.
The 1999 vintage has a deep blackish purple color, and packs a
mouthful of ripe fruit flavor.
14.9% alcohol. 400 cases produced. $27.00
per bottle.

1999
Zinfandel Bruschera
Vineyards
The Bruschera brother's vineyard is located in southeast Sonoma Valley
and it was planted in 1995. An interesting side note is that the bud
wood for the Bruschera, the Estate bottled and the P. Coturri Family
Vineyards came from the same source, Martini's Monte Rosa Vineyards.
This century year old clone manifests itself in dark, full-bodied wine.
750 were cases produced. $23.00 per bottle.
1999
Zinfandel
Frieberg Vineyards
In the 1970s,
Myron Freiberg was one of the first grape growers to introduce natural
growing techniques to the Sonoma
Valley and northern California. Myron was way ahead of his time, concerned
about chemical use and unhealthy farming practices long before it had
become fashionable. 100 cases were produced. $25.00 per bottle.
